Early Antique Winchester 1894 Takedown rifle in fine condition

Description

This Model 1894 Winchester takedown rifle, serial number 21,5XX was manufactured in 1895. A survey conducted by the Cody Firearms Museum documented 26,934 Model 1894 Take Down rifles listed in the factory records for the serial number range 1 – 353999, or 7.6% of the 1894 production through that serial number. This early example is chambered in the venerable 30/30 caliber and retains a high percentage of it's original finish. It is accompanied by a factory letter from Cody which verifies it's configuration. The receiver retains approximately 30 percent of the original blue with the balance in a nice, even patina.  There is no flaking or scratches on the reciever giving it a beautiful appearance.  The loading gate retains 50% of the nitre blue. The serial number is deeply stamped with that bottom portion of the receiver showing more wear to the finish from carry. The octagon barrel retains 90% of its blueing and has a strong manufacturer's stamp.  The bore is excellent..  Front and rear sights are factory original. Remnants of case coloring can be seen in protected areas of the lever and hammer while the balance of the case has a mottled patina. The rifle's forearm and butt were stocked in highly figured walnut. The stocks have some small handling marks and there is a very small chip at the rear of the receiver which I have shown in the attached pictures.  The butt stock is no longer proud to (above) the metal but matches the forend in finish and appearance. Although it is possible this is due to age shrinkage of the wood it is likely the butt stock was professionally refinished at one time. Given the overall excellent condition of the balance of the gun the need to have refinished the butt stock is suprising.  If so it was well done, matches the color and finish of the forearm and does not detract from the overall appearance. This 1894 TD remains in excellent condition for an early antique manufactured in 1895.  The highly figured wood and deeply blued barrel combine with the even blue and patina on the receiver to make this an exceptional looking antique 1894 rifle in the scarce takedown configuration. Values of Model 1894 rifles, particularly antique pieces dating prior to 1899, have skyrocketed in recent years. The 1894 was the culmination of Winchester's lever gun and although it is arguably the most popular centerfire rifle ever manufactured, antique examples are getting increasingly difficult to find. Minty, early takedown models are now commanding over $6000. This rifle is attractively priced and is a worthwhile addition to any collection of antique Winchester lever guns.   No FFL required for shipping.  Please call at 406 640 2232 for questions concerning this piece.
